A Brexit deal

Although many were relieved by the conclusion of the last minute Brexit Deal between the UK Government and the EU, thereby avoiding a no-deal Brexit, trading between the UK and the EU has changed significantly. But whilst there is a comprehensive free trade agreement (no tariffs, no quota), exporting goods from the UK to the EU comes with certain challenges. From a UK perspective exporting to the EU now is a real export outside of the home market. From an EU perspective, the UK now is a “third country”.

Red tape is here to stay

So red tape and non-tariff barriers (from a ban on the import of ham sandwiches by motorists, to special requirements for pallets used for transports) are here to stay. And the cost of transportation between the UK and the EU has increased as well.

Starting an EU business

For many UK exporters, the question now is whether they need to set up an EU base in order to allow them a manageable exporting process to the EU. Quite a number of UK exporters have already decided to do so and are currently considering where to set up their European subsidiary or branch office to protect their post Brexit trade.

Setting up a base in the Netherlands

Any UK business considering starting a business in an EU country, should consider carefully if setting up an EU hub makes sense for them. And if so, where they want to locate their base. For many UK companies the Netherlands may be a very good pick. The Netherlands are centrally located and have very good infrastructure. The Dutch workforce is well educated and English is widely spoken. Setting up a business in Holland, is a quick and efficient process.
